Call for Entries
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to what we affectionately call the Cinema of Distraction. Do you have what it takes to make a great 15 Second Film? It’s harder than you think, but here at the 15 Second Film Festival we’ve already gathered together over 100 such micro-short cinematic nuggets and now we’re commissioning and taking submissions for this year’s batch.
The 15 Second Film Festival, (featuring ‘The Mini Mogul’ Cinema: A unique 2-Seater Art Deco Picture Palace, and our NEW Inflatable Cinema) commissions, exhibits and distributes micro-short films. Our itinerant Miniature Film Festival tours as: a New-Media Roadshow & Cinematic Sideshow to Film, Arts, Music Festivals, Cultural Events and Universities in Ireland, UK and Europe…
Our festival is open for anyone, of any age, anywhere in the universe to participate. Films can be of any genre or type, be it documentary or drama, animated or live action, the only restriction is on the length of the film. We’re also planning to give away some fantastic prizes for the best films we receive this year, (Top Prizes and Film Award Categories – TBC). There are three ways to get involved:
FULL COMMISSION – 2011 (CLOSED)
Pitch a great concept for a film (or series of 3 or 5 films as a pack) by 31st July 2011 and you could qualify for: up to £500 for your production, plus full production insurance, access to professional studio facilities, camera equipment and mentoring assistance to help to create your project(s). You can pitch us up to three separate concepts at a time.
PRODUCTION ASSISTANCE ONLY – 2011 (CLOSED)
(As above, but without £500 commission). Pitch a great concept for a film (or series of 3 or 5 films as a pack) and you could qualify for: full production insurance, access to professional studio facilities, camera equipment and mentoring assistance to help to create your project(s). The finished film must be submitted to us by 30th November 2011. You can pitch us up to three separate concepts at a time.
3 – INDEPENDENT SUBMISSION – 2011 (OPEN)
Send a completed 15 Second Film, in the right format, to enter the competition, and be offered a filmmaker-friendly, non-exclusive distribution license. HANDY HINT – You may even already have a completed (longer) short that could be reduced, distilled and purified into the 15 Second Format… or maybe you have some totally awesome footage that just needs chopped into a micro-short? There is no limit on the number of films you can submit.
Unlike other film festivals we encourage you to contact us in advance to discuss your projects before submission. Remember: we have made a lot of 15 Second Films and we’re dialed-in to the format, so we can help you produce the highest quality and challenging new-media product.
Submissions for 2012 will open later in the year, more information will be available soon.
At the dawn of cinema, a large number of Edison and the Lumière Brothers’ very first films were just 15 seconds long. Opening titles were added later, either as a magic lantern slide, verbal intro, or a title card that also branded the film’s copyright status, meaning the films’ total length was around 25 Seconds in total.
Our 15 Second Film Format takes this historical precedent into consideration, so we give you 15 seconds for your film, plus 5 seconds of opening titles and 5 seconds of closing credits – meaning that each completed film is exactly 25 seconds long. The opening titles and closing credits are there as creative elbow room. The titles and credits are flexible, for example, you could have 2 seconds of opening titles and 8 seconds of closing credits, or 7 seconds of opening titles and 3 seconds of closing credits, or any combination you may choose. Sound and text over picture is allowed, just like any other films opening title sequence.
Full details of the 15 Second Film format, how to submit your ideas, plus more information about the £500 production support (CLOSED) is all available in the downloadable 15 Second Film Festival 2011 Submission Guide – PDF.
